Partners In Concept and Design

Kelli Mardell and Carola Hendriks first met at the Kentucky Horse Park  in Lexington KY. Despite their differences they developed a great friendship, and ultimately a partnership- one that developed into Waterford Shelties.  We are dedicated not only to the improvement of the breed, but also to the development of our own outstanding line of Shelties.

Kelli is a full-time student at the University of Kentucky, majoring in Equine Management with a minor in business. She is also a full-time employee at the Kentucky Horse Park where she is the Entertainment Coordinator/Event Host. She is the heart behind the show as well as the Waterford Sheltie breeding program.  Kelli's original interest in Shetland Sheepdogs arose when she lived with a Sheltie breeder for a number of years and fell in love with the breed.  She had the opportunity to learn about and participate in breeding and whelping litters, expanding on knowledge garnered as a youngster dealing with horses.

Kelli purchased her first dog, Bailey, from those breeders and began preparing the foundation of a breeding program of her own.

Carola Hendriks has lived all over the USA, but moved to Kentucky in 2006 after having spent 12 years in the California Bay Area. She has a degree from Virginia Polly Tech and State University in Animal Science and a second degree in Business from Rutgers University. Carola is the "business" end of the partnership, coming into the Waterford Sheltie program from many years of breeding and raising top level Quarter and Paint Performance Horses.

The farm where Waterford Shelties is located was originally designed as a horse breeding facility.
The dogs live in the house but also have a large safely fenced 100' x 70' outdoor area in which to play.
We have also completely enclosed our ten acres of farm with a no-climb fence.

It is the goal of Waterford Shelties to breed for improvement by focusing on temperament, conformation and pedigree.
At this time, in order to do ourselves and the breed justice, we are concentrating on our AOACs which come from champion North American lines.

Be sure to visit our Nursery and Available pages to check on the availability of puppies for show, performance, or just plain loving!
We occasionally have litters of AKC registered Pomeranians as well.
